Merge eBay and Squarespace Sales Data for Tax Prep in the United States
At tax time you need total revenue by channel without hand-fixing each export's columns first. In the United States, that also means accounting for sales tax: sales tax is charged per state, and whether you owe it in a given state depends on your economic nexus there — total revenue by state matters more than total revenue alone.
Why eBay and Squarespace exports don't line up
- eBay: Sale Date shown in the seller's local time; item subtotal, shipping, and final value fee as separate columns; an Order Number that can bundle multiple items bought together into one row.
- Squarespace: a Date column in ISO-like format; Subtotal, Discount, Shipping, and Total as separate columns; an Order ID that's a short alphanumeric code.
Neither export is built with sales tax in mind, so getting from "two raw files" to "the United States-ready numbers" means normalizing dates/totals first, then applying your own sales tax treatment on top of the merged total — not per platform separately.
How to merge them
- Set your target columns once in CSV Experts (Date, Channel, Order ID, Total, and a Currency column if you sell in more than USD).
- Map the eBay export, then the Squarespace export — each file shape is remembered after the first time.
- Export the merged sheet and apply your sales tax treatment to the combined total.
